Caley Organic Allotment. May 2007

In 2006 the Caley was very pleased to take on an allotment at the new Bridgend site in Edinburgh and run it as a demonstration allotment for Caley members and other allotment holders on the site. Bridgend is the first allotment in the country to be run on organic principles and has aroused much media interest,  featuring on the 'Beechgrove Garden' and recently winning  UKTV Best Allotment competition.

On the allotment we have set aside a large area for fruit growing with apples, pears, cherries and plums growing as bush, cordon and espalier with raspberries, gooseberries, blueberries, currants and a bramble. Vegetables for all year round use are being grown and we aim to try out some new and heritage varieties. There are herbs as well and a flower area to encourage bees and beneficial insects. We have compost bins and a comfrey bed is being established to use as fertiliser. Over the winter we will be sowing different types of green manures to improve the soil and keep down the weeds

The plot is run by volunteer members of the Caley who are all enthusiasts for allotments and organic gardening and we look forward to seeing you on the Open Day on the 5th August and showing you how we are progressing.
